Lillian E Powell

July 29, 1922 - March 31, 2019

Lillian E. Powell, age 96, of Mercerville, NJ, passed away Sunday, March 31, 2019 at the Mercerville Center. Born in Philadelphia, PA, and raised in Newtown, PA, Ms. Powell graduated from Newtown High School in 1940. She worked as a typist in Philadelphia before moving to LaGrange, GA, where she married James C. Powell and cared for his children. After returning to Newtown, PA, and raising a second family with Fred Selmon in Trenton, NJ, she worked at St. Francis Hospital in Trenton until she retired.

Lillian was dedicated to her children, learning, and having fun. She expressed her love for music by playing piano and being an enthusiastic Frank Sinatra fan club member, her love for travel by taking road trips, her love for cooking by collecting recipes, her love for words by reading and writing and doing daily crossword puzzles, her love for baseball by being a dedicated Yankees fan, and her love for games of chance by playing bingo and taking bus trips to Atlantic City.

Caring for and giving to others made Lillian the happiest. Her desire is that we celebrate her life by being respectful and helpful to others each day going forward. Let us remember Lillian for her kindness, integrity, and sense of humor. She will be always loved, never forgotten, and forever missed.

Daughter of the late Norman Hubbell and Elizabeth Hill Doan Klock, Lillian is predeceased by her brothers Fred Emmons and William Schaick. And her younger brother is Charles Schaick and his wife Helen. Her three loving children are Lillian Opdycke and her husband Donald, Sharon Jolly and her husband Raymond, and Fred Selmon III and his wife Cheryl. Affectionately called "Grandmom Radio," her eight grandchildren are Raymond Jolly, Michael Jolly, David Jolly, Marc Opdycke, Donald Opdycke, Daniel Selmon, Nina Selmon, and Michael Selmon. Her six great-grandchildren are Michael Jr., Kyler, Kira, Aiden, Alexander, and Jackson, along with several nieces and nephews who she remembered lovingly.

A private Celebration of Life, in lieu of a service, will be held at the convenience of and under the direction of her family. Memorial contributions in Lillian's name may be made to a charity of choice.
