Andrew J. Cosentino, renowned art historian and curator, passed away peacefully on July 5, 2024, with two of his great and great-great nephews by his bedside. He was 93 years old.
Born on June 30, 1931, he was the beloved son of the late Frank and Carmela Cosentino and was preceded in death by his brother Gabby, sisters Vienna, Eleanor, Fran, Jean, and his first
nephew John O. Andy is survived by his nieces, Jeanette, Carmen, and Carla; nephews, John R., Frank, John O., and David; great-nieces, Amy, Christina, and Gena; great-nephews, Charlie,
Johnny, Mike, Ryan, and Kyle; great-great-niece, Kalina; and great-great-nephews, Wyatt, Eli,
Rainn, and Reese. All will forever know him as Uncle Andy and cherish his memory forever.
Throughout his illustrious career, Andrew made significant contributions to the field of art history
and the preservation of historically significant land in and around Trenton. He held prestigious
fellowships at various institutions, including the Kress Fellowship at the University of Missouri,
the Unidel Fellowship at the University of Delaware, and a postdoctoral fellowship at the
Smithsonian Institution. Prior to these accomplishments, he served as a supervisor of art in
public schools for Ventnor City Schools, New Jersey, and as a professor of English and art
history, and dean of students at Trenton Junior College and Franklin and Marshall College in
Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
Andrew’s expertise and passion for art extended beyond academia. He curated exhibitions at
esteemed institutions such as the Smithsonian Institution and the Library of Congress, where he
dedicated his tireless efforts to preserving and sharing the beauty of art with the world. He was
a member of the New Jersey History Trust and Council and served as the Chair of the History
Preservation Commission in Hamilton, New Jersey.
Andrew also proudly served his country as a Corporal in the United States Army. His
commitment to public service extended to his involvement in the community as a former
committeeman in Trenton and as a member of Friends for the Marsh and D&R Greenway.
Furthermore, he selflessly donated his time to the Divine Word Missionaries in Bordentown,
New Jersey, where he assisted with their archives and the preservation of the Point Breeze
estate once owned by Joseph Bonaparte.
Andrew J. Cosentino leaves behind a remarkable legacy of academic excellence and a passion
for the arts that touched the lives of many. He will be remembered for his unwavering dedication
to preserving history and his relentless pursuit of knowledge. The void left by his loss will be
deeply felt by all of his friends and family who had the privilege of knowing him.
Rest in peace, dear Andrew. Thank you, Uncle Andy.
Graveside services will be held Tuesday, July 23, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at the Ewing Cemetery,
78 Scotch Road, Ewing Twp., NJ 08628.
Services are under the direction of the Buklad-Merlino Memorial Homes, Hamilton.
